The conversation feels harder than it is. Here's how to bring it up without anxiety, shame, or rejection.
Honestly, the conversation you're dreading is probably easier than you think. That gap between what you imagine saying and what actually comes out of your mouth is where most of the anxiety lives, not in the reality itself.
I've worked with hundreds of couples navigating this exact moment. The ones who feel most relief afterward aren't the ones with the perfect words. They're the ones who showed up honest and let their partner meet them there.
Let's name what's actually going on. You're worried about a few things at once. One: rejection. What if they think you want them to be replaced? What if they take it personally? Two: judgment. What if they see you differently after this? Three: awkwardness. How do you even start this sentence without it feeling clinical or weird?
These are not irrational fears. They're signals that this matters to you, and that's exactly why you should have the conversation.
Here's the thing nobody tells you. Your partner is probably also thinking about pleasure in the relationship, wondering if there's more they could be doing, or feeling pressure to perform a certain way. When you bring this up thoughtfully, you're often handing them permission they've been waiting for.
Don't launch into this conversation during sex, right after sex, during an argument, or when you're both rushed. You want space, calm, and privacy. A Saturday morning coffee. A walk. A moment after dinner when the house is quiet.
The tone should match: low-key, like you're sharing something real with someone you trust. Because you are.
Approach 1: Curiosity-focused "I've been thinking about our sex life lately, and I want to explore some things that might feel really good. There's this toy I've been reading about. Would you be open to trying something like that together?"
This works because it frames the toy as something for both of you, not a fix for anything broken.
Approach 2: Vulnerability-first "This is a little awkward to bring up, but I trust you. I'd like to try using a vibrator during sex. I think it would feel amazing, and I'd love to do it with you. Can we talk about it?"
This works because the awkwardness disarms the awkwardness. You're naming the elephant in the room, which gives permission for the conversation to just happen.
Approach 3: Question-based "If I wanted to try something new in bed, would that interest you? I've been thinking about it."
This works because it's low-pressure. You're checking temperature before you dive into specifics.
Pick whichever one makes you feel least like you're reading from a script. Authenticity matters more than perfect phrasing.
They probably will ask. "Why do you want to do this?" Here's what actually serves the conversation.
Don't say: "Because my orgasms aren't strong enough." (This invites shame on both sides.)
Do say: "Because I think it would feel incredible, and I want to experience that with you."
Don't say: "I read that it's supposed to be amazing." (Too abstract.)
